I'm gonna start with the answer first.
This is a thought that has surfaced and resurfaced throughout my mind ever since I started writing original music seven years ago.
And in those whimsical thought parades, I have come up with three solid reasons why my, and your, original music matters.
Lets dive in
One habit I have while I'm either near completion, or have just completed a song, is I listen to it many many times. Probably too many tbh. And it wasn't until recently I stopped and asked myself "why am I listening to this so much?".
It's because, if done correctly, this song I wrote is tailor made for me. I believe the best songs are written when exactly what we hear in our head, comes out into audio form. I don't change ANY part of my song to fit into something I think will make it more commercial, popular, etc. I write the kind of music I think is cool. Now, there are many dreadful nights where I end up scratching a song I have worked hours, sometimes even days on, but that's just part of the process.
Because the end result is a song that I am 100% pleased to listen to.
Modern Musical Innovation
How are great songs made? If I had the complete answer, I would be laying out on my own private beach soaking up the sun, reading a good book. But I don't own a private beach...I have a window.
But I do know one thing. Every great song was inspired by a song the songwriter(s) thought was a "great" song. They would not have written said great song without the songs that came before them.
We as songwriters have to keep up the tradition of building upon songs that inspire us. I keep on writing original songs in the hope that one day I can be apart of that magical chain. Forever linked to the most influential songs ever written.
And if not.....At least I tried 😃
You Are A Completely Unique Person...Sorta
I have recently taken the 16 personalities quiz and found it to be quite helpful. If you want to learn more about it, I hyper linked the website.
One thing I came to realize is that my personality is similar to other people. The way I act, react, and make decisions, does mirror other people. But not EXACTLY like other people. I am still a 100% unique person and so are you and your music.
If done correctly, your original music will resonate with people in a way no other music out there does. It is a thought I find hope and comfort in. Whether it is 1 or 1 million people, the fact is, it is it will AT LEAST BE 1! And if I can make that 1 person feel the way I do about certain songs I listen to, then I will feel amazing.
Don't feel bad about wondering if your original music matters in this world. In the past I have felt that my music didn't matter, and I'm sure many many other artists share that feeling.
I'm here to tell you it does!
If this blog didn't convince you, I'd love to hear your thoughts/concerns on why.
Yea, I find myself lost in thought quite often...And I wouldn't have it any other way
